Hong Kong, a bustling metropolis known for its skyscrapers and urban energy, has in recent years revealed a more artistic side through its growing street art scene. Central and Sheung Wan — at the heart of the city — are not only commercial and cultural hubs but have also become hotspots for large-scale murals and graffiti art. These works draw both locals and tourists eager to snap photos and explore. Each mural brings colour and life to the city while reflecting deeper themes of Hong Kong’s culture, history, and social issues. From busy alleyways in Central to the artsy corners of Sheung Wan, these murals give you a new way to experience the city. This guide will show you the top mural locations, the stories behind them, and how to plan a seamless mural-hunting adventure.

Murals in Central

Murals in Central

Central is known as the financial district of Hong Kong, filled with tall buildings and non-stop traffic. But hidden in its alleyways is a surprising world of street art that adds a refreshing artistic touch to the urban landscape. Most murals can be found around SoHo and nearby streets, blending local and international artistic styles — from traditional Hong Kong themes to bold, abstract art.

Capture's Dai Pai Dong

Capture's Dai Pai Dong

In the bustling Central district of Hong Kong, Outside of 3rd Floor, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St (near the Foreign Correspondents' Club), Capture HK has unveiled a stunning mural titled "Discover the Beauty of Everyday Hong Kong at Capture's Dai Pai Dong!" This is part of the "Capture x Local Artists Project," aimed at "Preserving Memories. Showcasing Culture." The initiative stems from a desire to honour Hong Kong's street food culture, the heartbeat of community life. Through art, Capture preserves the essence of traditional dai pai dong—their lively atmosphere, authentic flavours, and social bonds—for generations to come.

Collaborating with local artists ensures authenticity, as they capture not only visuals but the emotions and stories behind them. This creates resonant pieces that celebrate the city's unique character.

The artist, Van Sketcher (Vanessa), is a Hong Kong-born architect and urban sketcher. Her childhood love for arts evolved with architectural training, enhancing her detail-oriented style in ink and watercolours. Since 2014, she's sketched Hong Kong's vanishing scenes, from old eateries to cluttered streets, turning them into nostalgic tributes.

This mural transforms a building wall into a window to Hong Kong's soul, inviting all to appreciate its everyday beauty.

Elgin Street

The mural on Elgin Street is one of the most iconic photo spots along Central’s mural trail. Created by British artists Dan Kitchener (DANK) and Charles Williams, the artwork is themed around a rainy city night. It depicts pedestrians walking under umbrellas through neon-lit streets, with the wet pavement reflecting a spectrum of colours, evoking a sci-fi movie atmosphere. The piece combines DANK’s signature urban impressionist style with elements of Japanese culture, making viewers feel as if they’re walking through the rain-soaked streets of Tokyo. Visitors are recommended to start from the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator and walk along Elgin Street for about five minutes. The mural is best captured during dusk, when the soft lighting brings out the artwork’s intricate colours.

Peel Street

Peel Street

Heading up the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator, you’ll find a vibrant mural on Peel Street created by French artist Elsa Jean de Dieu, who is based in Hong Kong. Unveiled during the 2018 Hong Kong Street Art Festival, the mural features a joyful young man laughing heartily, surrounded by colourful bubbles. The artwork exudes energy and a sense of happiness, with Elsa aiming to bring a touch of lightness and joy to the city's busy residents. Located in the heart of SoHo’s dining district, the area is filled with restaurants, making it perfect for visitors to enjoy a delicious meal after taking photos—a true feast for both the eyes and the taste buds.

Graham Street

Graham Street

The staircase mural on Graham Street is one of Central’s most iconic photo spots. Inspired by Kowloon Walled City, it vividly portrays the dense architecture and bustling street life of old Hong Kong. Created by a local artist, the mural uses intricate brushstrokes to recreate the unique atmosphere of a bygone era, evoking nostalgia for the city’s past. Located at 45–53 Graham Street, the mural is best accessed on foot from Exit E1 of Central MTR Station, with plenty of smaller murals and street art to enjoy along the way.

Shingo Katori’s Vibrant Mural

Shingo Katori

Japanese artist Shingo Katori’s mural is tucked away in an unassuming alley in Central. Featuring bold colours and exaggerated character designs, the artwork immediately grabs attention. As part of Central’s vibrant street art scene, the mural highlights Hong Kong’s unique charm as a crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. Visitors can start from Central Market and reach the mural in about 10 minutes on foot. Using a map is recommended to avoid missing this hidden artistic gem.

Murals in Sheung Wan

Compared to the hustle of Central, Sheung Wan offers a more artistic, laid-back vibe. From Tai Ping Shan Street to Square Street and Po Hing Fong, Sheung Wan’s murals are tucked into narrow alleys and old building walls, blending beautifully with nearby cafés, galleries, and local shops to form a charming art district.

Rich View Terrace

Rich View Terrace

The colourful mural on the outer wall of Rich View Terrace is one of the most popular photo spots in Sheung Wan. Created by American artist Jurne, the mural showcases his signature vibrant colours and dynamic graffiti-style lettering. Formerly a stem cell researcher, Jurne transitioned into a full-time artist and gained recognition for his energetic style. During the 2024 HKwalls Street Art Festival, he painted three large-scale murals on Square Street, Tai Ping Shan, which have since become popular locations on Instagram. Visitors can walk from Sheung Wan MTR Station in about 8 minutes; it’s best to avoid peak traffic hours for optimal photo opportunities.

Square Street

German artist Hera created a female-themed mural for the Square Street Gallery in Sheung Wan during the 2024 HKwalls Art Festival. The girl's bow headband in the painting subtly incorporates several Chinese characters for "love," conveying a message of love and hope. Known for her delicate depictions of children and animals, Hera uses fine brushwork to tell warm, touching stories. This mural is located at 21 Square Street, where visitors can also find other smaller graffiti artworks nearby — perfect for travelers who appreciate a more artsy, indie vibe.

Tank Lane

Tank Lane

The stairway mural at Tank Lane was created by mainland Chinese artist Nut, featuring vivid white birds painted in a blue-and-white porcelain style that mimics the glossy texture of fine china. Refreshed during the 2024 HKwalls Art Festival, this piece replaced a former Bruce Lee graffiti and has since become a new landmark in Sheung Wan. Visitors can walk from the nearby Man Mo Temple to Tank Lane, spotting other hidden murals along the way — including quirky Sanrio-themed graffiti where beloved characters are dressed in suits, offering a fun and unexpected twist.

Po Hing Fong

The mural at G/F, 2 Po Hing Fong, Bo Hing Mansion, was created by British artist Emma Wallace. Blending abstract and realistic elements, the artwork captures the artistic vibe of Sheung Wan. It complements nearby cafés and galleries, making it a highlight along the cultural and creative route of the neighbourhood. Visitors are recommended to set aside half a day to stroll around Po Hing Fong, Tung Street, and Western Street, and enjoy the laid-back charm of Sheung Wan.

Plan Your Hong Kong Mural Tour

To fully experience the charm of the murals in Central and Sheung Wan, it's recommended to start your journey from either Central or Sheung Wan MTR station. Take the Mid-Levels Escalator to the SoHo district, then walk along Elgin Street, Peel Street, and Graham Street to reach the mural spots in Central, before heading to Tai Ping Shan Street, Square Street, and Tank Lane in Sheung Wan. The entire journey takes around 3 to 4 hours, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera or smartphone. Along the way, take the opportunity to explore local cafés and unique shops, such as Square Street Gallery in Sheung Wan or Uma Nota restaurant in Central, to add more fun to your trip.

For the best photo results, visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and harsh sunlight. Also, check the official website or social media of HKwalls for the latest mural updates, as many artworks are refreshed periodically to offer a sense of novelty.
